Types of scoliosis treatment
Scoliosis treatment depends on a few factors, such as:
- your age
- skeletal maturity (measured by your Risser sign and/or Sanders score)
- the severity of your curve
- how likely it is that your scoliosis is going to get worse
And combines one or more of the following:
- observation (the “watch and wait” approach)
- a bespoke scoliosis brace
- a bespoke exercise and physical therapy
- programme
- surgery
Benefits of bracing treatment for scoliosis
A well-designed and properly fitted bespoke brace can stop your scoliosis from getting worse and help you avoid surgery. The main aim of a scoliosis brace is to stop the curve from progressing until you have stopped growing.
Scoliosis braces can:
- correct or reduce the scoliosis curve
- manage symptoms
- manage pain
- improve the visual appearance of scoliosis
- correct both simple and complex curves
- reduce the need for surgery later in life
- improve posture
Matilde's scoliosis bracing experience
Matilde travelled to us from Chile for bracing treatment. Because of her age and her skeletal maturity, the risk of her scoliosis curve progressing (i.e. getting worse) was high.
Her father, Felipe says “Given the limited ambitions of the bracing treatment available in Chile, we started research focused on finding the best available brace technology… We booked a video appointment with Senior Orthotist Anna Courtney where she explained to us the characteristics and benefits of LOC’s corrective scoliosis brace. After the remote consultation, we took the decision instantly and arranged to travel to London for a face-to-face assessment and fitting of the LOC Scoliosis Brace.”
After just over a year of wearing the brace, Matilde’s before and after X-rays show that her Cobb angle reduced from 29 degrees to 14 degrees.
Kyphosis treatment
Kyphosis is when the top of the spine curves forward and makes the back look more rounded than usual.
Bracing helps relieve pain from kyphosis by adjusting shoulder and pelvis alignment. In growing patients, it prevents the condition from getting worse and can improve the visual appearance of the condition.
Scoliosis bracing for children: early treatment benefits
Early intervention can prevent scoliosis from worsening as children grow. We offer specific treatment protocols for children under 10 who have been diagnosed with early onset scoliosis (EOS).
For children with mild curves (10 to 20 degrees), Schroth-based specialist therapy may help correct or manage the curve. If the curve is above 20 degrees, we usually recommend a combination of therapy and bracing.
Treatment for teenagers with scoliosis: correct curves and avoid surgery
In adolescence, scoliosis curves can progress quickly and unpredictably while the skeleton is still growing and during hormonal changes. Starting bracing treatment early can reduce spinal curvature and can prevent the need for surgery.
For teens with scoliosis curves over 20 degrees, we recommend the LOC Scoliosis Brace combined with a tailored Schroth therapy program.
Close monitoring during puberty is essential, especially during growth spurts, to track any progression of the curve.
Delayed scoliosis surgery brace
Your or your child’s spinal surgery may be delayed or canceled for various reasons. Our scoliosis brace can help by stopping the curve getting worse, balancing posture and reducing any back pain while you wait for surgery.
Scoliosis treatment for adults: pain relief and support
Exercises and training to improve posture are typically the first treatment recommended for adults with scoliosis. We brace adults depending on their needs. Whether that’s to reduce pain, improve posture or lessen the visual appearance of scoliosis.
Since the spine has matured and is less flexible, bracing won’t typically reverse the curve but can:
- relieve pain, reducing the need for medication
- improve posture
- stop the curve getting worse
- improve the visual appearance of the spinal curve
Bracing is particularly helpful if you have severe scoliosis and want to avoid surgery or re-surgery.

The LOC Scoliosis Brace is crafted from high-quality, durable hard plastic, providing robust support for the spine while ensuring optimal functionality. The brace is designed with foam pads at key pressure points to enhance comfort and reduce irritation during wear. These pads are strategically placed to offer cushioning and support where it’s needed most, such as around the ribs and back.
For ease of use and comfort, the brace features adjustable Velcro straps that allow for a custom fit, enabling patients to modify the tightness for optimal support throughout the day. This combination of materials ensures that the LOC Scoliosis Brace is both flexible and effective, offering both comfort and the necessary corrective support for scoliosis management.
-
Our clinical data shows an average in-brace correction of 85%, surpassing other braces like the Boston brace (50%) and asymmetric braces (50-65%). This allows for effective treatment of both simple and complex curves across various age groups.
