Myeloma, or multiple myeloma, is a type of blood cancer that develops in plasma cells in the bone marrow.

Myeloma affects the parts of the body where bone marrow is normally active in an adult, such as the spine, skull, pelvis, rib cage, long bones of the arms and legs and the areas around the shoulders and hips. The spine is the most frequently affected area.

Myeloma mostly affects those aged 65 or older, however it has been diagnosed in people much younger.

Treatment for myeloma can control the disease but myeloma is currently a relapsing-remitting terminal cancer. This means there are periods when the myeloma is causing symptoms and/or complications and needs to be treated. This is often followed by periods of remission where the myeloma does not cause symptoms and does not require treatment.

High dose steroid treatment for multiple myeloma can further weaken the bones and affect the spine.

Spinal bracing for myeloma

Your consultant will advise if a Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) or a Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (CTLSO) brace is a suitable part of your myeloma therapy.

A bespoke spinal brace for myeloma can:

  • control pain by stabilising the spine
  • reduce the mechanical load on the vertebrae which may aid healing
  • prevent further spinal deterioration
  • protect the sternum and rib cage

Your spinal brace will also help to prevent any further collapse or fractures of your vertebrae.

It’s important that the brace is fitted as quickly as possible following diagnosis, as sagittal decompensation occurs early, and may be sudden.

How custom myeloma spinal bracing works

Spinal braces must be very well-fitting to achieve the above goals. The best way to achieve a well-fitting spinal brace is to have one custom-made so that it’s a perfect fit.

At the London Orthotic Consultancy, we use 3D scanning technology to get an accurate digital image of your torso and back. We then use this scan to design and model the brace using CAD/CAM software.

The type of brace you’re prescribed will depend on the location of your fractures and whether they are stable or unstable.

Our experienced technicians then make your brace by hand in our in-house manufacturing workshop. Your clinician will then fit the brace and make any adjustments if needed.

You will normally be advised to wear this brace for around three months, while steroid dosage is at its highest, if not longer.

Initially, you will need to wear the brace full time, except at night.
