Our clinicians have received specialist training to fit and manufacture Fior & Gentz technology at their dedicated workshops in Lüneburg, Germany.
What is the Neuro Swing system?
The Neuro Swing system is an adjustable, dynamic ankle joint designed to be used in a carbon fibre ankle-foot orthosis (AFO). It’s designed to mimic the natural movement of the ankle while offering personalised, dynamic support.
The Neuro Swing system enables us to return your gait pattern to one as near regular as possible. This protects the bones and joints and encourages your muscles to work correctly.
What’s more, the Neuro Swing system allows tremendous flexibility to respond to your changing balance, gait and strength capabilities, so we can really optimise your walking pattern. As you progress and improve in your rehabilitation journey, these springs can be continuously adjusted, adapting and evolving to reflect your changing needs.
How it works
The Neuro Swing AFO has a unilateral ankle joint that is designed to be held within a carbon fibre construction.
The springs can be altered in three ways. Resistance in the springs can be reduced or increased and the range of movement can be altered as can the alignment of the ankle.
This, combined with regular gait lab assessments, allows us to make precise adjustments for optimal function.
“The Neuro Swing AFO has been absolutely life changing for me. I’ve gone from limping around with lots of pain and struggling to stand for long periods of time, to climbing mountains, running around and walking with a near normal gait.”
Nina Sparks, Team GB para-snowboarder and patient
Neuro Swing AFO benefits for patients
A custom-made Neuro Swing Ankle Foot Orthosis, combined with a professional gait lab assessment, offers numerous benefits for patients:
1. Makes walking easier
The carbon fibre frame makes the AFO lightweight yet strong, preventing fatigue during prolonged use.
The dual spring mechanism (anterior and posterior) enables real-time adaptation to walking patterns.
2. Promotes natural movement
If you retain some active ankle motion, the system encourages you to use these muscles. So unlike fixed AFOs, the Neuro Swing supports muscle engagement rather than blocking all movement.
This, combined with regular gait lab assessments, allows us to make precise adjustments for optimal function.
3. Offers dynamic and adjustable support
Unlike off-the-shelf orthoses, this provides individualised support and correction, preventing discomfort and inefficiency.
The Neuro Swing system’s adjustability allows fine-tuning of:
- dorsiflexion assist to lift the foot for better clearance
- plantar flexion resistance to ensure controlled foot lowering
- ankle alignment for improved stability
4. Encourages better posture, stability, gait and prevents long-term issues
- The dynamic support system improves postural stability and keeps you in an upright position.
- Controlled tibial progression during walking improves knee stability and prevents knee hyperextension.
- Reduces compensatory movements, such as excessive hip hiking or circumduction, improving overall walking efficiency.

Who is the Neuro Swing AFO for?
Neuro Swing AFOs are versatile and can help patients with a range of symptoms and conditions. Particularly, those with:
- drop foot
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- brain injury
- peripheral neuropathy
- stroke

We can also fit AFOs with the innovative Neuro HiSwing, the first hydraulic ankle joint in orthotics.
This advancement builds on the Neuro Swing, providing enhanced mobility and stability, but the hydraulic valve allows the wearer to change the angle of the ankle joint independently, meaning patients can:
- walk more easily on hilly terrains
- be more comfortable in a sitting position
- expend less energy and effort when climbing stairs
- wear shoes with different heel heights
- walk, stand and sit at home just in slippers or socks
