What is Drop foot?

Drop foot, or foot drop, makes it difficult to lift the front part of your foot properly, causing your toes to drag when you walk. It can affect one or both feet, making walking harder, increasing the risk of trips, and impacting balance and stability.

Drop foot can happen for different reasons, including:

  • nerve damage
  • muscle weakness
  • spinal cord injuries
  • stroke
  • multiple sclerosis
  • conditions like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

The most common cause is a compressed nerve in the leg that controls the muscles responsible for lifting the foot.

How orthotics can help

Orthotic treatments for drop foot are designed to improve walking ability and reduce symptoms. The right treatment depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Here are some of the most common options:

  • Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO): These braces support your lower leg and foot, keeping your ankle properly aligned and helping with movement while walking. AFOs prevent foot drop by keeping your foot in the right position.
  • Carbon fibre braces: These lightweight braces mimic the natural structure of your lower leg, offering support while allowing a more natural range of motion.
  • Foot orthotics: For milder cases, custom-made shoe inserts can provide cushioning and support, addressing any biomechanical issues that contribute to drop foot.
Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be an option. Procedures might include nerve decompression, tendon transfers, or other techniques to restore muscle function and improve movement.

The best approach for treating drop foot depends on each person’s needs, which is why a full biomechanical assessment is always the first step.

How LOC treats Drop foot

The best orthotic treatment for drop foot depends on your specific needs, including the cause, severity, and overall health. That’s why a full biomechanical assessment is always the first step.

At LOC, we have extensive experience in treating drop foot. In recent years, we’ve been successfully prescribing the adjustable Neuro Swing AFO from Fior & Gentz for many of our patients.

This AFO features a unique unilateral ankle joint with two adjustable springs—one at the front and one at the back. The resistance in these springs can be adjusted to fine-tune movement, alter the range of motion, and improve ankle alignment.

By restoring a more natural gait, the Neuro Swing AFO not only helps with walking but also:

  • Protects joints and bones by improving posture and reducing strain
  • Encourages muscles to work correctly, helping to prevent further weakness
  • Boosts confidence and mobility, making everyday activities easier

Many of our patients have seen dramatic improvements with the Neuro Swing system.

Real stories: How the Neuro Swing AFO is changing lives

Nina stroy: From pain to Possibility

Nina Sparks, team GB Para snowboarder, knows firsthand how life changing the Neuro Swing AFO can be.

“The Neuro Swing AFO has been absolutely life-changing for me. I’ve gone from limping in pain and struggling to stand for long periods to climbing mountains, running around campsites, and walking with a near-normal gait.”

Because it’s custom moulded to her leg and foot, it’s comfortable to wear and gives her the support she needs on and off the slopes. Read Nina’s full story.

A patient’s experience with Drop foot and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

One of our patients, who has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, shared how the Neuro Swing AFO has transformed his mobility:

“Compared to my previous AFO, the Neuro Swing has made a huge difference. First, because it’s custom-fitted, I no longer get painful friction points or hard skin. Second, I feel confident enough to walk in open spaces without a walking stick. And finally, LOC’s aftercare service has been fantastic—no long delays or bureaucracy like I’ve experienced with the NHS.”

Before and after Neuro swing AFOs fitted

Michelle’s story: Walking without pain again

Michelle’s drop foot started after a stroke in 1998. Over the years, walking became harder, and the pain in her right leg got worse. She tried a posterior leaf spring AFO, but it didn’t help. Eventually, a knee consultant told her, “Your knee has basically given up.”

She was recently fitted with the Neuro Swing AFO—and within hours, she felt a difference.

“The pain in my knee has gone, and the muscles above and below my knee have started to work again. The neuroswing has got my leg into the right position to walk normally.”

For Michelle, it’s not just about movement; it’s about getting her independence back.
