What is the Neuro HiTronic Knee Joint KAFO?

The Neuro HiTronic is an advanced, electro-hydraulic knee joint designed for use in a Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (KAFO).

Movement sensors detect lower leg position and movement, signalling when to lock and unlock the knee joint. It offers exceptional stance phase protection, using micro-hydraulics to enhance stability and mobility.

Developed by German orthopaedic technology company Fior & Gentz, the Neuro HiTronic is one of the most advanced technologies in modern orthotics.

“It’s an amazing, incredible bit of technology. It’s difficult to describe what it means to me and my feelings of wellbeing… it is an important step on my long road to recovery.”

How it works

The Neuro HiTronic knee joint uses an intelligent hydraulic locking mechanism that responds dynamically to your movement:

  • During standing and the stance phase of walking, the knee joint is locked by the hydraulics, preventing unwanted bending and ensuring stability.
  • During the swing phase, the knee joint unlocks, allowing the leg to move freely for a natural gait cycle. An integrated air spring assists in smoothly swinging the lower leg, promoting a harmonious and fluid walking experience.

A high-performance microprocessor processes sensor data 400 times per second, which means it can react very quickly to changes in walking conditions.

The patented micro-hydraulic system makes the joint small and lightweight, ensuring it can be comfortably worn under trousers.

This advanced technology allows for smooth transitions, enhancing the safety and efficiency of walking, particularly for patients with complex mobility challenges.

Benefits for patients

This advanced technology allows for smooth transitions, enhancing the safety and efficiency of walking, particularly for patients with complex mobility challenges.

  1. Enhanced stability: The stance phase control prevents unexpected knee bending, which means you can be more confident in walking and standing.
  2. More natural movement: The automatic unlocking during the swing phase supports a more fluid and natural gait.
  3. Lightweight and discreet design: The compact micro-hydraulics allow for a sleek design, making it comfortable to wear under regular clothing. All joints are made from direct-milled titanium which make it easier to walk and requires less energy.
  4. Responsive to change: The high-speed microprocessor processing adapts in real-time, which means it can keep up with an active, varied lifestyle.
  5. Ideal for bilateral users: Patients with bilateral orthoses (on both legs) can benefit from the ability to initiate walking with either leg, promoting ease of movement.

Who is the Neuro HiTronic Knee Joint KAFO for?

This system is ideal for a variety of patients, including those with:

  • spinal injury
  • multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • post-polio syndrome
