What is a stroke?
A stroke, also referred to as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, leading to damage or death of brain cells in the affected area.
Strokes can be caused by either a blood clot blocking an artery (ischaemic stroke) or bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke).
Symptoms
A stroke can result in various physical, cognitive, and emotional difficulties. Common symptoms include:
- problems with speech and communication
- cognitive impairments (e.g., memory loss, difficulty concentrating)
- emotional changes (e.g., depression, anxiety)
- vision problems
- balance and mobility issues
Long-term stroke symptoms
While some stroke patients recover fully, two-thirds of stroke survivors experience long-term effects, often affecting mobility.
When a stroke impacts movement, it usually affects only one side of the body, as it typically damages one hemisphere of the brain. Many people experience weakness, spasticity, or difficulty coordinating movements on their affected side.
Orthotic treatment
Orthotics can play a valuable role in the post-rehabilitation phase to support long-term mobility and function.
Our tailored orthotic solutions help stroke patients regain strength, prevent joint misalignment, and enhance overall mobility for a smoother rehabilitation journey.
